Emmys 2024: A Look at TV Road Ahead With Room for Lots of New and Returning Series

  • Variety‘s Awards Circuit is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year, featuring the the official predictions for the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Tony Awards, curated by Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages reflect the current standings in the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any individual contender. As other formal (and informal) polls suggest, competitions are fluid and subject to change based on buzz and events. Predictions are updated every Thursday.”
  • “The most significant competition appears to be in the limited series categories, where veteran anthologies like “True Detective” and “Fargo” are expected to run alongside other star-packed entries.”
  • “HBO/Max is back with the third season of “Hacks,” providing another opportunity for Jean Smart to shine at the ceremony. Additionally, the final (maybe) season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” could make its presence felt. The cable/streaming hybrid also boasts formidable drama contenders with the critically acclaimed (but recently canceled) “Winning Time: Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” and the historical third season of “The Gilded Age.” However, HBO and Max seem particularly strong in the limited series category, notably with Stephen Frears’ political satire “The Regime” featuring Kate Winslet.”
  • “In addition to “The Crown,” Netflix has a substantial slate that includes the new drama “3 Body Problem,” from the creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, best known for “Game of Thrones.” Netflix will also continue to push for Shawn Levy’s “All the Light We Cannot See,” in addition to the newly released “Griselda” with Sofia Vergara. The streeamer also has the comedy “The Gentlemen” from Guy Ritchie, starring recent “White Lotus” Emmy nominee Theo James. Moreover, there’s hope for “Girls5eva” to become a contender, a comedy that should have been a shoo-in when it was on Peacock.”

Austin Butler: I Had to ‘Choose Between Going to the Screen Test’ for ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ or ‘Saying Yes to Quentin Tarantino’

  • “How do you choose between Tom Cruise and Quentin Tarantino? It’s a dilemma Austin Butler faced before his Oscar-nominated performance in “Elvis” turned him into a global star. During an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast (via People) while promoting his new Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air,” Butler confirmed reports he was in the running to star opposite Cruise in the blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick.””
  • “Tarantino had offered the rising star a role in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.” Because Butler had wanted to work with the “Pulp Fiction” director “for so long,” he wasn’t going to let a potential Tom Cruise blockbuster get in the way.”
  • “It was a smart decision on Butler’s part, as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” casting director Denise Chamian previously told Variety that the “Top Gun” team ultimately felt he was too young for the role of Rooster, which ultimately would be played by Miles Teller. But meeting Chamian during the “Maverick” casting process put Butler on her radar for “Elvis,” so it all worked out in the end.”
  • “Both “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” would go on to be box office successes and awards season contenders, with the former grossing $1.49 billion to become the 11th highest grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office.”
  • “Butler’s “Masters of the Air” starts streaming Jan. 26 on Apple TV+. He’ll be back on the big screen in “Dune: Part Two” on March 1.”

Robert Downey Jr. Is Grateful He Lost Best Actor at 1993 Oscars: I Was ‘Young and Crazy’ and It Would’ve Made Me Think ‘I Was on the Right Track’

  • Robert Downey Jr. just picked up his third career Oscar nomination, this time in the supporting actor race for his performance in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Many pundits are viewing Downey as the frontrunner after he won the same category at the Golden Globes and Critics’ Choice Award, plus picked up nominations from the BAFTA Film Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Whatever happens, Downey believes he is in better shape to receive an Oscar now than he was during his first nomination at the 1993 ceremony.”
  • “The actor spent many years after his first Oscar nomination in trouble with the law. He was notoriously arrested in 1996 for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded gun and given three years of probation. He was then jailed for nearly four months a year later after skipping a court-ordered drug test. He skipped another test in 1999 and was sentenced to three years in prison. Downey served 15 months, then was arrested again four months after his release for drug possession.”
  • “Downey’s history with the law made him a tough sell to Marvel for the career-defining role of Tony Stark. He was former Marvel Studios’ president David Maisel’s top pick, but “my board thought I was crazy to put the future of the company in the hands of an addict.””
  • “Downey lost the 1993 Oscar for best actor to Al Pacino for “Scent of a Woman.” He would earn his second Oscar nomination in 2009 for the comedy “Tropic Thunder,” but the award was given posthumously to “The Dark Knight” actor Heath Ledger. Downey Jr.’s current nomination for “Oppenheimer” is one of 13 noms the Nolan-directed epic has under its belt. It’s the most nominated film of the year.”
