What Would Warner Bros. Discovery-Paramount Merger Mean for Cable TV? Some Networks Would Likely Be Sold Off

  • “And so goes the most unusual TV awards season ever, where a delayed Primetime Emmys — with its June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, eligibility window — falls smack into a Globes, Critics’ Choice and guild awards season with a January to December, 2023 time frame.””Mega media merger mania is once again afoot in Hollywood with very, very early talks between Warner Bros. Discovery‘s David Zaslav and Paramount Global’s Bob Bakish about a potential merger of the two companies.
  • “The first piece of the puzzle in any serious integration plans would be sorting out what’s to be done with WBD and Paramount’s U.S. cable networks, MoffettNathanson’s team of media analysts wrote in a research note Thursday, after news of the merger talks broke Wednesday afternoon.”
  • “According to Nielsen data and MoffettNathanson’s analysis, Paramount’s cable networks as a whole rank second only to WBD’s in linear viewing time in most quarters. And together, the two companies would hold 35%-40% of linear television time viewed in the U.S., “a greater share than any single entity has controlled since the pre-cable network era and likely to be among the biggest sources of potential regulatory pushback.””
  • “However, whatever WBD would choose to keep from Paramount’s offerings (Paramount Network is a solid choice, with those “Yellowstone” ratings, and Nickelodeon would give a serious boost to WBD’s kids demo on cable, and offer a huge children’s content library to stream on Max) could be well worth it, according to MoffettNathanson, which notes those combined cable assets, plus the move into broadcast with the inclusion of CBS, “would produce additional cost synergies and potential revenue (advertising or affiliate fees) synergies.” “
  • ” “If WBD were really looking to make an acquisition, especially for a broadcast network, NFL and other must have sports rights, plus a leading FAST service in Tubi, 18.6% FanDuel option and even a studio lot, we think [Fox] would be a much better fit currently trading at a discount valuation and an easier deal to pull off (especially if Fox News ends up dealt to News Corp. in a side deal),” the media analysts write.”

Sony Dates Scarlett Johansson-Channing Tatum Film, George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s ‘Wolfs’ for 2024

  • “Sony has dated an untitled Apple Original Films production starring Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum for July 12. Formerly known as “Project Artemis,” it’s set to screen in premium large formats with Columbia Pictures distributing.”
  • “Meanwhile, the George Clooney-Brad Pitt starrer “Wolfs,” also from Apple Original Films, will open Sept. 20 in IMAX and premium large formats. Written and directed by Jon Watts, “Wolfs” follows two lone-wolf fixers assigned to the same job, and co-stars Amy Ryan.”
  • “Directed by Greg Berlanti, the former “Project Artemis” project co-stars Jim Rash, Ray Romano, Anna Garcia, Donald Elise Watkins, Noah Robbins, Colin Woodell, Nick Dillenburg and Christian Zuber and Woody Harrelson. Set against the 1960s space race, the currently untitled film is written by Rose Gilroy. Johansson serves as producer under her These Pictures banner, and Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn produce alongside Johansson for These Pictures. Sarah Schechter produces for Berlanti Productions. Robert Dohrmann executive produces.”
  • “Apple won the “Project Artemis” package, which will now get a new title, in a $100 million deal in 2022. At the time, Chris Evans was starring with Jason Bateman directing. Evans dropped out after schedule changes due to Bateman’s departure, which was reportedly due to creative differences, and filming took place last fall in Atlanta.”
  • ” “Wolfs” is also written by Watts, who produces with Dianne McGunigle. Clooney produces alongside Grant Heslov through Smokehouse Pictures. Pitt produces alongside Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner for Plan B Entertainment.”

DGA Finds Little Progress on Diversity in Feature Film Hires

  • “There has been little improvement in diversity among film directors over the last five years, as the total number of features as plummeted, according to a new report from the Directors Guild of America.”
  • “The DGA report found that women directed 16% of the films released since 2018, while non-white directors accounted for 17%. The total number of DGA-covered theatrical releases fell from 292 in 2018 to 162 in 2022, which the union said has had an effect on the opportunity for hiring diversity.”
  • “There is far more diversity in TV directing, which has seen steady increases over the last decade. In 2022, the DGA reported that 38% of episodes were directed by women in the prior season, while 34% were directed by people of color.”
  • “”Though there has been significant progress in episodic television hiring, feature film hiring continues to be both inconsistent from year-to-year with little or no growth over the last five years,” said Lesli Linka Glatter, the union’s president, in a statement. “The DGA remains united in our commitment to continue pushing for meaningful action from producers that will increase access and representation that aligns with our diverse membership.” “
  • “However, much of the increase among women directors — from 8% to 16% — was explained by a change in the methodology. Without that change — which eliminated a budget threshold of $250,000 — the number would have risen only to 12%.”
  • “The latest report from the Writers Guild of America also found significantly less diversity in film than in TV. That report found that 37% of TV writers were people of color, compared to 23% in features; and that 45% of TV writers were women, versus 30% in features.”
