SOUR by Olivia Rodrigo…I wish I didn’t like this album. Knowing that it’s all about a seventeen year old complaining about the fact that she can’t date an older friend irritates me. The story seems petty to me. But, unfortunately, I really enjoy this album.
First off, this album captures the emo sentiment with such ease and grace that it’s ridiculous. This album reminds me more of Your Favorite Weapon by Brand New than Billie Eilish or Lorde . Because, Olivia Rodrigo is equally pissed about her life. She expresses her disdain so well. Her voice and intonation make me care. And so, I have to resist the temptation to look up all of the drama surrounding her life.
Musically, Rodrigo crafted a catchy well produced record. There’s not really a bad song. Though, I didn’t like “Good 4 U” the first time around. But, in the context of the album it sounds great. Also, the pianos sound great throughout the album. And, the drums sound big without being overbearing. Also, the punk aspects don’t feel out of place. And, why should they, the lyrics are emo punk lyrics.
Speaking of the lyrics, they’re great. She’s specific when she needs to be and she’s vague enough to make the songs relatable. When Rodrigo gets bitter about her ex enjoying Billy Joel, she feels real and relatable. And, that sentiment really never stops. She’s consistently vulnerable and sad.

Sour (stylized in all caps) is the debut studio album by American singer Olivia Rodrigo, released on May 21, 2021, via Geffen Records. Rodrigo stated that the album explores her perils and discoveries as a 17-year-old. Its title refers to the uncomfortable “sour” emotions youngsters experience but are often shamed for, such as anger, jealousy and heartache. The musical style of SOUR was inspired by Rodrigo’s favorite genres and singer-songwriters.
