Taylor’s Version is Fearless?

Taylor Swift recently recorded her hit album Fearless. In this review I’d like to disregard the controversy surrounding the rerecord and focus on the music. This rerecord of Fearless has two parts to it. The first twenty songs are faithful rerecords of tracks from the deluxe version of Fearless. And, the last six songs are previously unheard songs.

The rerecords are incredibly faithful to the original versions. I’ve only noticed two major differences. First, Swift has drastically improved her vocals. She’s a better singer now then she was when she originally recorded these songs and it shows. Second, the drums are louder on this mix and the non percussive instruments are in general quieter. This change in the mix can make the new versions seem more exciting.

The previously unreleased songs are all pretty great. Swift does a great job of maintaining sonic cohesion while adding her new flavor of pop. The one exception is “Don’t You,” which feels more like a song that belongs on Lover. My personal favorites are “Mr. Perfectly Fine” and “Bye Bye Baby.”

Ranking System:

One Star: It’s good, but not my cup of tea. Two Stars: It’s my cup of tea, but I wouldn’t drink it all of the time. Three Stars: It’s my cup of tea and I’ll drink it any day for months on end.
